2020-09-20 Keyhaven to Barton

Total 19.1km and 9.2km along the coast

Although the day started dull it was forecast to be warm and sunny in the afternoon, so we parked at Barton Common car-park in the morning. From here we walked across the common, along Angel Lane and across the fields and through woods to Downton. Then through the sprawling Shorefield mobile home park but found a good path that lead to the familiar route along the Danes Stream through the Nature reserve and Pleasure gardens to Milford and on to Keyhaven.

We stopped for a picnic lunch soon after we started along the coast and watched boats and some stand-up paddleboarders having a lesson. Past the yacht club and along to salt-grass lane, which was flooded due to a high spring tide.

It was quite crowded around the “crabbing bridge” and past the new beach-huts at Milford-on-Sea with people enjoying the sun and a few swimming. The path was closed West of the White House, a former Children’s hospital but now luxury flats as there was severe erosion and the sea wall had collapsed to the West, so we had to go to the main road and around the Beach House.

From there the path is now open all the way to Barton, despite more erosion and cliff falls around Taddiford Gap, where the fencelines and path have been moved inland.

We walked down a rather rough path at Becton Bunny to swim from the beach, with just a little sand as the tide was still fairly high, after drying in the warm sun we climbed over rocks to the path along the main beach at Barton-on-Sea, again quite busy and quite a few people swimming.

We went up the ramp to the Beachcomber café also quite busy and with a marquee in the garden to provide shelter for the socially distancing diners in the garden. From there it is only a short walk across Long Meadow back to the car.
