2023-04-18 Coverack to Poltesco (Just South of Kennack Sands)

Part of section 35 in the SWCPA handbook

9.68 km along the coast and 9.20 km inland

Although the forecast was for another sunny day, the morning was cold with an East Wind, and unusually in Cornwall the next length of the coastline was exposed to the East. So we stocked up with Pain au Raisin from the very friendly Coverack stores and followed the coast South, initially around the Paris Hotel and then away from habitation. This length, although relatively low cliffs to start, the path is a mixture of fairly muddy parts with steppingstones and boulders so making for slow progress.

At Black Point there is a watch House, where a Huer would watch for Pilchards and direct the fishing boats and a little further on a couple of steep descents to steams and sheltered coves. We stopped for coffee and the Pain au Raisin and then continued to Kennack Sans – as it was still fairly low tide, there was an extensive sandy beach where we stopped for lunch in the lee of a cliff that gave us shelter.

We continued just a little further to Poltesco where there is a National Trust exhibition describing the fishing industry and the Serpintine Industry, which made features from the local rock in Victorian times.

From here we returned to Kennack Sands on the road, were delighted to find one of the two caffes selling Roscilli ice-cream. Then back on a series of footpaths and minor roads to the campsite at Coverack.
