2022-03-07 Salcombe, South Sands to Soar Mill Cove

5.7km along the coast and 4.0km inland. About half of section 51 in the SWCPA handbook

After a little confusion we parked at Overbeck Gardens, in Salcombe, National trust so free parking for members. We discovered later that the gardens were closed for the winter. But at least this was a place to park right on the Coastal path and only a short distance from South Sands where we got to yesterday.

Starting as a track and then becoming a rocky, but generally good path leading towards Bolt Head. There was a strong wind, supposedly Southeast, but it felt cold, more East from Russia. Bold Head is actually a series of quite steep headlands with excellent views both back towards Salcombe and to the coast from towards Prawle Head so we could see where we had walked on a much warmer and sunnier day in January.

When you round the headland, the view becomes West toward Plymouth. The middle part of this section is a wide grassy track making for easy walking, though the official path is nearer the coast.

Eventually, we walked down a fairly steep incline to Soar Mill Cove. A small sheltered sandy cove and a nice place to stop for a little. As we were then about half-way to Hope Cove, we decided to return to the car at Overbeck, and took an inland route following a series of footpaths and minor roads, past Rew and Combe and eventually down to South Sands, to re-join the Coastal Path and return to our car.

We were rather keen to get some diesel on the way back to Hope Cove, as none was available yesterday, presumably due to the war between Russia and Ukraine which had only started just over a week before. So were pleased that the Co-op in Marlborough had some today, and we now have more than enough to get home on Thursday.
