2022-05-19 Kingsand to Whitesand Bay

8.37km along the coast and 3.89km inland

The weather had changed overnight and it was sunny for most of the day. Though with a cold wind at times.

From the Campsite we walked down the same steep path to Kingsands and spent a little while walking around the village and had coffee overlooking the sea from the road by the Devonport Inn. The path leads through to the twin village of Cawsands – there is little to know when you move from one to the other, both have narrow alleys, and numerous pretty houses, no doubt many just holiday homes.

In Cawsands there is a simple landing stage for the ferry that comes from the Barbican in Plymouth, which we saw earlier when we were having coffee. There is also a gig racing club and a sailing club, both of which we saw in action in the evening.

From the village a good path leads a gentle ascent through trees, and bluebell woods, eventually to Penlee Point. Then it is solid track and a grassy path to Rame Head and a simple chapel on the highest point of the headland.

After having a picnic lunch, we continued towards Whitesand Bay. Along this cliff, which still seemed to be part of the Edcombe Estate, there are a large number of holiday chalets, that have obviously been there for a long time and now nestle into the grassy cliff, with a series of footpaths between them, much more pleasant that the large holiday parks that we have seen elsewhere.

From here we followed a combination of paths and minor roads back to Maker Camp.
