2022-11-15 Portmellon to Gorran Haven

4.97 km along the coast and 3.55 km inland

After heavy rain and strong winds overnight, it was a sunny morning, but the forecast was for more heavy showers by midday. So we drove the short distance to Gorran Haven and parked there. Then a short walk in the sunshine down to the beach. A fairly easy walk along a combination of grassy footpaths and minor road lead to the steep hill down to Portmellon. As the tide was high, to road by the Rising Sun was covered in seaweed, with the occasional wave splashing onto the road.

There was nothing open in Portmellon, so we started walking back along the coastal path. Initially beside new expensive glass and chrome houses and onto a private road, complete with unfriendly notices. The path follows the edge of the sea before rounding Chapel point, where an old chapel seems to be being converted into more luxury accommodation.

After shirting a small beach, complete with an old boat-house, there is a steady climb with spectular views, however the weather deteriorated and we had a heavy showers just as we approached Gorran Haven.

The coastal path joins a road that decends to the centre of the village, where we were glad to find a local shop “Cakebreads” that not only sold hot pasties, but provided a couple of table inside to eat them and with their coffee in proper mugs. Here we met another couple sheltering from the rain who had walked from “Seaview” holiday village and were glad of not just the tea, but some local advice of how to get back.
