The remainder of section 28 in the SWCPA handbook
4.52km along the coast and 7.81km inland including walking around Geevor mine
We were staying at the Old coastguard campsite close to Pendeen lighthouse and as the forecast was for rain in the afternoon we decided to walk along to Coastal Path first and then return inland. So we set out from the campsite, where the path initially follows the road, then onto a fairly easy path this time with the sea on the right..
This section is spectacular but fairly easy walking. There is a strange contrast between the post-industrial landscape and the natural beauty. At first you pass the lower sections of Geevor mine and the older Wheal Mexico mine, more of that later.
The path generally follows the top of the cliffs, but there are views of numerous engine houses, some right down by the sea, as the mines here went deep under the sea, and out to sea.
We joined yesterday’s path near Kenidjack Farm and walked inland to the small village of Bottalack where we stopped for a pint at the Queen’s Arms . From here it is a fairly easy inland walk to Geevor Mine, now a museum to Cornish mining.
Geevor Tim Mine was one of the last to close and so retains much of the mine machinery and now houses some interesting exhibitions. The visit can also include a short visit underground to the much earlier Wheal Mexico mine.
We returned, this time in the rain, to the campsite, mainly following the road through Pendeen village.
