Hythe

5. Hythe

Hythe pier is in Southampton water and provides access over the mud to the ferry to central Southampton. It has the oldest still operating pier railway. When we visited in 2018 it was in need of restoration but has since been taken over by a charitable trust who can hopefully make improvements.

Since we visited in 2018 both the Pier and the Ferry have gone through troubled times, suffering badly due to closure of the ferry with Covid19.

However things are now improving, the ferry is running again and the pier has been taken over by the Hythe Pier Heritage Association who are raising money to restore this elegant pier to its former glory.

We visited again in October 2021, slightly different photos with the tide high and the sun out and also the beginning of the restoration with one of the train carriages looking almost new.
