Although we needed to be back home by the end of the day, it was again warm and sunny so we thought that it would be a good idea to walk a little way along the next section, which has the reputation of being one of the hardest in the handbook. So we parked Frodo in the beach car-park at Crocklets beach.
The path goes along the promenade and then a gentle rise out of town, with good views back of Bude’s beaches. The first section is a pleasant open grassy path, and quite popular. After about a mile there is a decent down to Northcott Mouth, where there were signs to a tea-garden.
Then after a short steep section, the open path continued, but immediately inland there was a basic campsite, where tents and campervans were parked in a large field. We learn that this was Dunsmouth Farm.
From here it was only a short distance to the next decent at Sandy Mouth, where there is a National Trust café and a car-park, as well as another lifeguarded sandy beach.
We returned by walking, what seemed a long way up the road, and then along a series of track which took us back via the campsite and Northcott, before returning to Crocklets beach for a swim before driving home.
