2025-07-16 Porth to Porthcothan

The remainder of section 21 in the SWCPA handbook

17.3km along the coast. 3.71 km Inland and 19km by bus

From our campsite it was a fairly easy walk to Old MacDonalds farm – a rather superior campsite, where after a little confusion due to poor internet reception and a poor bus app, after quite a long wait we caught a bus back to Porth Beach. Quite a long bus trip as we visited various villages and Newquay (Now Cornwall) airport on the way. So, it was midday before we really started walking.

Porth Beach – Newquay

From Porth Beach where we had stopped the night before there was a climb and then a descent to the beginning of Watergate Bay – very much a surfing beach. But we stopped for a welcome cup of coffee at Wax, mostly a surfer’s pub, but friendly to everyone.

Watergaye Bay

Then another climb and descent to Mawgan Porth where we stopped for a picnic despite the continuing drizzle, another friendly village where we bought chocolate and nuts at the village stores.

Bedruthan in the mist

The sign said 4 and a quarter mile to Bedruthan which was a little worrying, but we continued. There is now no safe access to the beach at Bedruthan steps but a fairly easy clifftop path which should have had specular view – but these were lost in the mist. Though busy around the carparks this stretch was mainly quiet.

We continued to Porthcothan and having passed a place advertising a cuppa and cake, which was not open, were please to find the Porthcothan stores still open till 17:00 and served us tea and cookies. Another party arrived at just about 17:00 and we were delighted to notice that they got their hot chocolate and not a “sorry we are tidying up”

Porthcothan stores – a welcome despite the drizzle

From here just a short walk up the hill to our campsite at Seaview.
