2026-09-10 Morwenstow to Welcome Mouth

Our final part of section 13 in the SWCPA handbook

4.5 km along the coast and 6.9 km Inland

The weather forecast was suggesting rain in the afternoon, so we decided to do a slightly shorter walk today and a longer one tomorrow and also complete the Bude to Hartlang Quay section.

So we drove back to Morwenstow and parked in the “official” car park by the Church and tea-room. Then just a short walk back to Coast Path. The map showed that although only a short distance to Welcome Mouth, there were 4 valleys to cross, meaning steep down and up.

The third valley, with the rather curious name og “Litter Mouth” seemed to be one of the steepest and the way up was a continuous staircase of (I think) 182 steps. You have to admire the people, probably volunteers, who build and maintain the path.

This was a surprisingly busy section and near Little Mouth we met a Dutchman who was planning walking all the way to Bude, hopefully he got to his B & B before too late.

Going down to the almost last valley at Marsland Mouth, we could see that as the tide was out, but coming up, it was possible to walk to Weclome Mouth across the beach. So we took the easy option of walking across some flat rocks and sand and stopped for lunch on the beach.

We returned along a series of raods and paths, however this was also quite strenuous with a steep old road through the Marsland Valley Nature reserve and the ususl problem of finding the start of some poorly signed footpaths at Marsland Manor.

However we got back to Morwenstow before the rain started in earnest and stopped for tea at the Rectory Farm tea room, quite traditional and even provide extra hot water with the tea.
